I Hate Halloween

Ever since high school, when I read Carrie, before anyone knew who Stephen King was, I have hated horror stuff. Shortly after I read the book, the movie came out and that iced it for me. After that final scene, (no, I mean the final, final scene with Amy Irving), I would never see another horror movie. I don’t understand why people group sex and violence into the same category; sex is a joyful act between two people and violence definitely isn’t. Why do some parents let young kids watch everyday violence on the news and in the movies, but turn off the love scenes? IT. DOES. NOT. MAKE. SENSE.

Anyway, I get the history of Halloween and I understand the traditional fun of letting little kids dress up and knock on doors for trick-or-treat, but this macabre obsession with dark, evil things disturbs me. If I had my way, our front porch would be decorated nicely with pumpkins, cornstalks, a lovely wreath for the door. But no, Brad wants the whole kit and caboodle. He spent $250 on strobe lights, and skulls that talk, and battery-operated eyeballs that peak out of the bushes. The worst part is the mask that oozes blood. I will spend Halloween evening in my bed with a good book and the door closed.

Mom--

You have always been a party pooper when it comes to Halloween. I remember that Dad always took us out trick-or-treating, it's too bad that you don't like Halloween because it is so fun to dress up and it's cool to be able to be something else for one day out of the year besides yourself.

Your daughter cracks me up...

I get what you're saying -- I hate horror movies and there is enough bad stuff...but I LOVE the goofy side of it, I can't take children with fangs seriously so they don't scare me, and I love the creativity of the decorations. And I'm Mexican and we have Dia de los Muertos, which is about remembering and honoring your deceased loved ones and to me it's all mixed up with Halloween, so it's one big goofy + very personally touching holiday...plus free candy, you cannot beat that :)

p.s. thank you! the CD came the other day and I have not had a chance to listen yet, you know how crazy this week is with a child around :) but I was so delighted to get it and am looking forward to a couple hours to devote to listening as soon as this madness ends.

I love Halloween! The best part is getting together with a bunch of friends and going to the haunted houses, one after another all evening, only stopping long enough for a glass of wine and on to the next one. We have one in DM that the cost is 200.00. If you make it all the way through you get your money back. I would love to go but I'm afraid the odds are against me making it all the way through. Too much money just for a good scare.....Can't justify the cost. Aunt Gwen

I'm still laughing at the thought of you in bed reading with the door closed and Brad doing the Halloween thing. I also hate Halloween. Whenever the subject comes up I just diplomatically say "It's not one of my favorite holidays". As far as horror movies go, I just can't imagine why anyone enjoys them.
