On the other end of the spectrum, waking up at 4AM to the caw of bluejays is NOT fun. I have earplugs sitting very close at hand, but sometimes they are not enough. So this is my solution: an air horn, the kind they use on boats to warn people away. They are very loud. I have to warn Brad to cover his ears and then blast off the horn. It works every time.
When thunderstorms threaten, we have an enormous tarp that we throw over the bed. Just unhook the mosquito net from the arbor and drop in onto the bed, then cover it up. If it's windy too, we have to secure it with bungee cords.
