Burning Man 2007

Burning Man 2007, originally uploaded by c8mills.

It’s wonderful to come home and fully appreciate little things like free-flowing water, a clean bed, quiet. It is impossible to go to Burning Man and not come back changed. For some it’s a deeply spiritual experience, for others it’s a wild party, for me it’s an escape from everyday life into a far different world.

I always wonder what it would be like if a society could really function like BM. Imagine how we would be with commerce only for absolute necessities, no advertising, minimal services available, no TV, no cell phones. You live very close to your neighbors and spend the majority of your time outside. People have tons of time for creative pursuits, long conversations, sharing of meals. People focus, of course, on the incredible party, but it is the daytime lifestyle that appeals to me.

The one thing I find about myself is that I am so much more open there. I am a naturally shy person; usually I find it very difficult to have a conversation with someone I don’t know. But when I’m there, talk flows effortlessly; there is so much to discuss. Every single person will at least say hello, and most will stop to talk, just because. Lots of them will give you a hug when they say good-bye. This fascinates me. Also, it truly does not matter what people choose to wear (or not wear). I have no problem talking for an hour or more with a naked stranger. I wish the world was more accepting of what’s okay to wear in public; people can be so creative with their clothing. The fashion world has messed us up with their “in-style” philosophy.

Things I Never Want to Forget about Burning Man

Burning Man 2007, originally uploaded by c8mills.

OK, here’s the list:

Our spontaneous mini-concert. A guy goes walking by our camp with a guitar. Brad says, “Play us a song.” And he sits down and plays and talks for an hour, even though he was supposed to be at a “gig” somewhere else.

Zip Code Man. If you say your zip code he will tell you where you live and your favorite restaurant in that area. It blows peoples’ minds. He walked passed our camp and Brad recognized him and said, “89523.” He nonchalantly replied, “Reno,” because it wasn’t even a challenge for him. But we started talking and he asked about our RV and next thing you know we are hanging out with him.

We camp across from two guys from London who claim to be famous record producers in England. We have no way to verify this. They gave us a vinyl LP of their music and signed it like they were rock stars or something.

Same guys, cooking bacon on a little BBQ-er in front of their camp. Obviously BBQ is not their specialty as he poured a whole can of lighter fluid on the charcoal, then laid the bacon directly on the grill. He said to us, “American bacon sucks.”

Grocery Cart. A motorized grocery cart full of food goes by, with a woman manikin “driving" it. When you look closely at the food, you see a guy’s head barely sticking out.

The Crude Awakening. Eight giant metal people, representing the religions of the world, worshiping a 300 foot oil derrick. When they blew that up on Saturday night, it was the coolest thing I have ever seen at Burning Man. It went up like a 1000 foot mushroom cloud.

Watching Vickie “ride the bell” at the greeters’ gate, because she was a newbie.

After watching some guys scale the outside of a treehouse, a girl walked up to the door and said, “Ding-dong.” The door opened and she went right inside.

Tequila Pit Crew. They had a golf car with Nascar sounds playing loudly, and a pit crew in full red & white regalia, including buxomous blondes in tight jumpsuits. They would grab someone off the street, lay him in a stretcher, and give a tune-up complete with drills, and of course, a shot of tequila and stand him up--all in about 6 seconds.

Bus without a driver. This is true. A white school bus drove down our street while the driver was in the back of the bus working on the sound system. There was no one else on the bus.

The DPW parade. Department of Public Works spends two months building and tearing down the city. On Saturday they have their own parade. They are a scary looking crew, drinking whiskey and screaming at us, "Give us your beer!" With fire cannons flaring, and water cannons soaking the crowd. One motorcycle jumped out of line, circled behind us, and the girl spanked Ty as she rode passed.

The sax player on top of his van at sunset playing Amazing Grace and Moondance.

There was a circus. While we watched a lovely lady doing a trapeze act, they hooked up another girl unseen. Suddenly she starts screaming like a maniac as they drag her up by her boots, tied in a straitjacket. She struggled herself loose and finally broke out of the straitjacket altogether. It was amazing to see.

I basically wore the same thing for three days straight--these blue flowing calf length pants, a belly dancer's orange scarf, a little blue furry vest over my playa-colored tanktop, a very beat up straw cowboy hat. I either wore big leather boots or my sandals with it. They were already dirty and it wasn’t worth changing.

We saw a guy do a spiritual healing. This fascinated me as he made strange sounds and pulled the bad energy out of his body and left it on a post.

Getting up before sunrise to feel the freedom of a new day. There are so many people still out from the night before. There’s nothing like watching the sun rise over the uniqueness of this city.

Amy was 100 percent adorable in her costume of a tight fitting white camisole and teeny shorts with little pompoms all over them. It had a flowing net skirt. And thigh-high white boots.

Nekked Colton. I have to mention Colton. He lived next door to us in Truckee and we have always called him Nekked Colton, because he’s a nudist. Well, we discovered him at BM and now he comes and hangs out with us while we are there. Just a really nice old hippie nekked guy.

They added four streets, which just about doubles the camping space available. It was not overcrowded and there were close and clean porta-potties everywhere. I heard that approximately 51,000 people came and 50 percent of them are virgins. Those are not official numbers.

The Porta-Potty Queen. A group of people wait until some unsuspecting girl goes into the porta-potty, then dash in to roll out a red carpet, leading to a platform and a golf cart. When she comes out, she is overwhelmed by people cheering and playing We Are the Champions. They give her a crown and a trophy, lead her down the red carpet to the platform and yell, "Speech, speech!"

The Man Burns Tonight

Incredible, scary dust storm yesterday, while we played Rumikube in the air conditioned RV. We are spoiled burners. After 6 years, we know what to expect and take it in stride. Around 6PM, a double rainbow bridged the city against a blackened sky. It certainly improved everyone's attitude as they shook out their camps. The storm ruined the pyrotechnics planned for the burning of the oil derrick, the largest fire cannon in the world. They will do it tonight after the Man burns instead.

Burning Update

Quick Report from Black Rock Desert:

On Monday, someone took it upon himself to burn the man at the lunar eclipse, so when we arrived on Tuesday morning, there was a charred frame left atop the pavilion. They claim they will have it re-built in time for Saturday's proper burn. The ranger who caught the guy said that he was easy to spot--there were 8000 people running towards the man and one guy running away.

It's lovely and cloudy today, which keeps the heat down. A threat of showers, which is good if it's a light shower, but a disaster if it's a full-on thunderstorm. Mostly very pleasant here, little dust, warm, but not overwhelming heat. Having lots of fun meeting people from around the world and cruising the playa on our bikes.

More soon.

Burning Man or Bust

Today is all that last minute pulling together for Burning Man. Driving around town is an eye-opening experience. Burnerspotting is our favorite activity. You can always tell by the massive amount of stuff crammed into a car or truck with beat-up bikes tied on top. The parking lots of Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Trader Joe’s are a circus of RV’s in various stages of loading.

For the last few weeks, we’ve been costume gathering, baking, and preparing meals. We like to have as much pre-done as possible. Cooking out there is a low priority, and no one wants to use the water to wash pots and pans. We make things like chicken enchiladas or that can be cooked in the sun oven. Or pasta salad and a corn/black bean salad that are great served cold. I baked oatmeal cookies and banana bread. Add some cereal, fresh fruit, and sandwiches and it’s enough to last all week.

Today was the final loading of the bikes and necessities. After going six times, we have the routine down pretty well. We have our dust masks, head lamps, goggles, and glow sticks. Also, the camera is ready so I can post pictures.

We will leave at 6AM, because we want to get there and set up camp before it gets too hot. Brad’s sister is going for the first time. I am still debating taking the laptop. They have wi-fi, but the dust is brutal. If I leave it at home, my next entry will be next Tuesday. Check back.

What is Burning Man?

I get this question all the time and there is simply no way I can answer succinctly...30,000 people on the hot, dusty, windy, flat Black Rock Desert of Nevada…dressed or undressed in strange costumes…greeters…theme camps of assorted oddballs to visit...center camp with coffee and ice for sale, nothing else…pack everything in, pack everything out… leave no trace…massive, bizarre, art…fire dancers…drum circles…playa…sky divers…giant black smoke rings in the sky…dr. megavolt…bikes everywhere...goggles…face masks…pagan rituals…public massages…critical tits parade…thunderdome…radical self reliance…creativity…participation…large sound…wild art cars…the department of mutant vehicles…body paint…piss clear…swirling dust storms...

…and then they burn this giant wooden man.

Go to burningman.com and click on current tv to see it. I got my tickets already. Do you have yours? The man burns in 44 days.
